He is best known for writing a massive poem called Orlando Furioso. This work is a romance epic that tells many adventures. It follows characters like Charlemagne and the hero Orlando. The poem also describes battles between the Franks and the Saracens. Ariosto used a special rhyme style called ottava rima. He also used a clever way to tell his stories. He would often stop one plot in the middle. Then he would start a new side story. This technique is called Cantus Interruptus.

He was born in Reggio nell'Emilia in 1474. He was the oldest of ten children. His father wanted him to study law instead of poetry. Ariosto studied law for five years before he could read old classics. After his father died, he had to take care of his family. He worked as a messenger for Cardinal Ippolito d'Este. The Cardinal was not a very kind boss. Ariosto even had a heated argument with him. This argument led to him being dismissed from service. Later, he worked for Alfonso, the Duke of Ferrara.

Ariosto was also a diplomat and a leader.

He traveled to Rome as an ambassador to Pope Julius II. These trips were very tiring for him. One journey made him sick for the rest of his life. On another trip, he was almost killed by the Pope's orders. This happened because the Pope was at war with the Duke. Later, Ariosto served as a governor in Garfagnana. This area was in the Apennines mountains. It was a hard job because there were many bandits there. One story says a bandit chief apologized to him. The chief realized Ariosto was the famous author of Orlando Furioso.

His writing changed how people thought about the world.
