Jerusalem Delivered is a famous epic poem that tells a grand story.

It is an Italian work written by the poet Torquato Tasso. The story is about the First Crusade. It follows Christian knights, led by Godfrey of Bouillon, as they battle to take the city of Jerusalem.

While the story is based on a real historic conflict, it adds many magical elements. Characters often face a hard job. They must choose between their feelings of love and their duty to fight. This struggle between the heart and honor is a central part of the poem.

The poem is very long and follows a specific structure. It has 20 cantos, which are large sections of the story. There are 1,917 stanzas in a style called ottava rima. In total, the poem contains 15,336 lines.

Tasso used many characters to tell his tale. Some characters are real people from history, like the Prince of Galilee, Tancred. Others are made up, like the sorceress Armida. The poem also uses ideas from older stories by writers like Homer and Virgil. These old stories help shape how the battles and sieges are described.

Tasso began working on this poem in the mid-1560s. He finished the whole work in April 1575. That same summer, he read his poems to Duke Alfonso of Ferrara and Lucrezia, the Duchess of Urbino.

Before the full version came out, a pirate edition of 14 cantos appeared in Venice in 1580. The first complete editions were published in 1581 in Parma and Ferrara. The poem was a huge success right away. On its first day, two thousand copies of the book were sold.

Many famous scenes from the poem became popular in art.

Artists often painted the romantic parts of the story. One famous scene shows the witch Armida discovering the sleeping knight Rinaldo.

Another popular scene shows the Princess Erminia finding the wounded Tancred. She even cuts off her own hair to use as a bandage for him.

These paintings were made by many artists in Italy and France. They often showed the characters in beautiful, outdoor settings.

The poem's influence spread across all of Europe for a long time. People did not just read it; they turned it into operas, plays, and dances.

It was especially popular before the French Revolution. The story offered a mix of love, fighting, and exotic places. Even though some critics found the magic a bit too much, the poem remained a major work. It helped shape how people thought about epic stories for many years.
