La Araucana is a famous Spanish epic poem.

It tells the story of the Spanish conquest of Chile. This poem is a very important part of the Spanish Golden Age. People in Chile also see it as their national epic. The poem was written by Alonso de Ercilla y Zúñiga. He was both a soldier and a poet. He lived during the 16th century. He actually fought in the Arauco War himself. This makes his writing feel very personal and real.

Writing this poem was a hard job for Ercilla. He did not have a desk or a library. Instead, he used scraps of paper while fighting. He wrote down verses during quiet moments in the war. He used a difficult style called octava real. This is a group of eight lines. Each line has 11 syllables. The lines must follow a strict rhyme pattern: abababcc. This was a big challenge for many poets. The finished poem has 37 parts called cantos.

Ercilla was born into a noble family in Madrid, Spain. He worked for the household of Prince Philip. Later, Philip became King Philip II of Spain. Ercilla asked to join a military trip to Chile. He was a brave soldier in the campaign. However, he had a fight with a comrade. Because of this, a general named García Hurtado de Mendoza sentenced him to death in 1558. His sentence was changed to prison instead. He was released and fought at the Battle of Quipeo. He later lived in Peru before returning to Spain in 1562.

The poem describes many famous people and events. It tells of the capture of Pedro de Valdivia. It also tells of the death of the hero Lautaro. Ercilla wrote about the leader Caupolicán. Caupolicán was a brave chieftain of the Araucanians. The poem shows great respect for these leaders. Ercilla describes them as noble and brave. He even shows sympathy for the people he was fighting. This was a new way to write about war. He mixed real history with stories that felt like old legends.

Many people have talked about this poem through the years. In the book Don Quixote, a priest decides not to burn it. He thought it was one of the best poems ever written. Later, a writer named Voltaire had some mixed feelings. He thought the poem wandered too much. But he still liked some of the beautiful speeches. In 1858, a man named Antoine de Tounens read a translation. He even tried to start a kingdom in South America because of it. Today, students in Chile still study this work in school. It remains a key part of history and literature.
