Hernández used a special way of writing called payadas. These are rural ballads that sound like songs. The poem uses lines with eight syllables. He also used a unique six-line stanza. This stanza has a special rhyming pattern. Some people say it sounds like the six strings of a guitar. The poem was a huge success when it was new. By 1879, the first part had 48,000 copies in print. People even read it aloud in rural bars called pulperías.
