He was a champion of Commedia dell'arte. This was a traditional style of Italian comedy. It often used masks and actors who made up their lines as they went. Gozzi wanted to keep this old way of acting alive. He felt it was a vital part of Italian culture. He even joined a group called the Granelleschi Society to help. This group worked to protect Italian literature from foreign influences.

To save this art form, Gozzi used his writing skills. He wrote a satirical poem in 1757 to defend the old style. In 1761, he wrote a comedy called "The Love for Three Oranges."

This play used a fairy tale to tease other writers. He worked with the Sacchi company of actors. This troupe was struggling to find work because of new styles. Gozzi gave his plays to them to help their business. His efforts were a huge success and saved the company from closing.

Most Commedia dell'arte actors did not use written scripts. They preferred to improvise their performances. Gozzi was different because he wrote out all his scripts. He began adding magical and mythical elements to his stories. These were called "Fiabe Teatrali," or tales for the theatre. He did not mean to change the old style with magic. He only used magic as a way to make fun of others. However, the audience loved the supernatural parts of his plays.

Gozzi lived from 1720 to 1806. He was born into a family of minor nobles in Venice. As a young man, he joined the army in Dalmatia. Later, he lived in Venice and wrote many famous plays. His play "Turandot" was very important. It was translated by Friedrich Schiller and performed in Weimar in 1802. Many great thinkers like Goethe and Madame de Staël praised his work. He was famous across Europe, even if people in Italy did not always agree.

His stories still live on in many different ways today. Many modern stage works were inspired by his original plays. For example, the story of "Turandot" became famous operas. The composer Giacomo Puccini wrote a famous opera based on it. Other musicians like Sergei Prokofiev also used his ideas. Even in the 20th century, writers like Bertolt Brecht used his themes. Gozzi's magic tales helped bring the old Italian styles back to life.
