Gautier had a very busy way of working. He spent most of his career as a journalist. He wrote many articles for journals like La Presse. He also wrote for Le Moniteur universel. As a critic, he had a special goal. He wanted his readers to "see" the art through his words. He described paintings and plays so clearly that people could imagine them. He even suggested that plays could be shorter. He thought three acts were better than five.
