Church architecture includes many different types of buildings. These include churches, chapels, convents, and seminaries.

For two thousand years, these buildings have changed many times. Architects used new ideas and borrowed older styles. They also responded to new beliefs and local traditions. Some buildings are huge, fancy cathedrals that stand out in a town.

Most people, however, go to smaller parish churches. These are found in almost every town and village. While some are works of great art, most are much simpler. They often use local materials and decorations from the area.

Building a church can happen in many ways. A very simple church might just be one room. It uses materials found nearby, like mud brick or logs. In some African countries, these churches are even circular.

This matches the round houses people live in there. As groups grew, they wanted more permanent and beautiful spaces. They invested time and money into stone or brick buildings. Often, a church has two main areas. One space is for the people to sit. The other space is for the priest to perform rituals.

Over time, people might add towers, aisles, or side chapels.

In the beginning, Christianity was not a legal religion. For the first three centuries, people worshipped in secret. They met in synagogues or in private houses. These were called house churches.

A famous example is the church at Dura Europos. It was built shortly after 200 AD. People removed a wall to make two rooms into one. They also made a small room for baptisms. Later, some buildings were built specifically for worship. One such building was in Nicomedia, near a palace. It was destroyed by soldiers who used axes and iron tools.

Everything changed in 312 AD after a battle. The Roman emperor Constantine helped make Christianity a legal religion. Architects began using Roman styles for these new buildings. They used the basilica style, which was a large hall.

This style had a high center called a nave. It also had lower aisles on the sides. Many churches also used an apse. An apse is a semi-circular space at one end. This is where the bishop or priest might sit. In the 4th century, large churches were built in Rome. These included Old St. Peter's Basilica and Santa Maria Maggiore.

Church buildings often connect to the history of the places around them. In Ravenna, many churches from the 5th and 6th centuries still stand.

These include the Basilica of San Vitale and the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia. Sometimes, people even turned old Roman temples into churches. The Pantheon in Rome is one such example. In the 20th century, builders started using new materials. They began using steel and concrete to design churches.
