Later, the Roman Empire allowed Christianity to be a legal religion. Architects began to use Roman styles for new churches. One popular style was the basilica. A basilica is a large hall with a high center. It has lower aisles on the sides.

Many churches also use an apse. An apse is a semi-circular space at one end. This is often where the priest performs rituals.

Some churches are very simple. They use local materials like mud brick, wood, or stone. In some places, they even use banana leaves for roofs. In other areas, churches might be circular. This happens in African countries where houses are often round. Over time, people added more parts to buildings. They added towers, chapels, and side rooms. This helped churches grow as people's needs changed.
