Gothic architecture

arts Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Gothic architecture is a style of building from Europe. It began in northern France during the 12th century.

This style changed how people built large spaces. The most famous part is the pointed arch. These arches help buildings reach toward the sky.

Builders also used rib vaults, which are stone ceilings with ribs. To hold up tall walls, they used flying buttresses. These are stone supports on the outside of a building.

These tools allowed for very large, bright windows. Many windows used stained glass to let in colored light.

People used this style for many things. They built great cathedrals and churches for pilgrims. They also made castles, palaces, and large halls. Some of these famous sites are now World Heritage Sites. The name "Gothic" was once used as an insult. People in the Renaissance thought it was a messy style. However, many people still love its beauty today. It grew from older styles like Romanesque architecture. It stayed popular in places like England for a long time.
