It is a very grand place for many people. The building sits on a site used for many years. At least five different churches stood there before this one. Many of those old buildings were lost to fire.

Most of the current cathedral was built between 1194 and 1220. It is a great example of High Gothic art. This style uses tall walls and big windows. Large stone supports called flying buttresses help hold the walls up. These supports let the windows become very large. Many of the original stained glass windows are still there. They show many colorful stories.

The building has two very different towers. One is a plain pyramid shape. The other is a fancy spire built later. People travel from far away to visit this site. Some come to see the art and architecture. Others come on a special journey called a pilgrimage. They visit to see holy items like the Sancta Camisa. This is a cloth said to be from the Virgin Mary.
