People build mosques for prayer and large palaces for kings. They also make baths, schools, and markets. These buildings cover a very large area. They reach from Africa to Asia.

Early builders learned from others. They used ideas from the Roman and Byzantine empires. They also used styles from the Sassanian empire. Over time, they made their own special styles. They used local stone and wood to build.

Builders added beautiful art to the walls. They used calligraphy, which is beautiful writing. They also used geometric motifs, or shapes like stars and lines.

They even made new parts like minarets. A minaret is a tall tower used for prayer calls.

In many mosques, you will see a mihrab. This is a small niche in the wall. It shows the direction for prayer.
