Christian mythology is a large group of stories tied to the Christian faith. These narratives include sacred stories from holy books and many older legends. Some people use the word "myth" to mean a traditional story. Others use it specifically for sacred tales about the distant past.

Many of these stories explore big ideas like heroes, paradises, or the end of the world. They can also include stories about a great flood or a journey to a mountain. These themes help people understand their beliefs and the world around them.

Many of these stories follow certain patterns or themes. Some involve a hero fighting a great battle or a person traveling to the underworld. Other stories describe a god who dies and then rises again.

There are also stories about how a city or a tribe began. Some myths focus on self-sacrifice or finding a beautiful paradise. These repeating ideas are found throughout much of Christian literature. They help connect different stories to the same big questions.

History shows that these stories have changed and grown over time. In the Middle Ages, many legends became very popular.

One famous tale is about Saint George and the dragon. Another involves King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. Even the story of Saint Brendan is a famous legend from the 6th century. His voyage included encounters with sea monsters and floating islands.

These stories were often told even if they were not in official holy books.

Different groups within Christianity hold different views on these stories. For example, the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches accept certain books like Judith and Tobit. However, many Protestant groups do not include those same books as part of their official canon.

Some thinkers, like Rudolf Bultmann, described the world in the New Testament as having a mythical structure. He suggested the world has three levels: heaven above, earth in the center, and the underworld below. In this view, supernatural forces like angels or demons can influence everything that happens. This makes the history of the world feel much more active.

Modern writers often use these old themes to create new stories. Authors like C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien used Christian motifs in their books.

Lewis even called the story of Jesus a "true myth" because it worked like a myth but actually happened. Other famous works include John Milton's poem Paradise Lost. Dante Alighieri also wrote the Divine Comedy, which describes a journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. These stories show how ancient ideas still live in our books today.
