Christian mythology refers to the vast collection of stories and narratives associated with the Christian faith. This term covers a wide variety of legends, particularly those considered sacred narratives. These stories often explore profound themes such as the existence of paradises, the nature of self-sacrifice, and the journeys of great heroes or saints.

Recurring motifs also appear throughout Christian literature. These include myths of combat, stories of a descent into the underworld, and accounts of a dying-and-rising god. Other common elements involve flood myths, the founding of cities or tribes, and the concept of the axis mundi, which is a central point connecting heaven and earth.

Scholars often debate the exact definition of the word "myth." In a broad academic sense, a myth is simply a traditional story. However, many folklorists use a more specific definition. They describe myths as tales believed to be true that are set in the distant past or other worlds. These stories often feature heroic, inhuman, or extra-human characters.

Historically, the Greek word "muthos" meant a simple narrative or story. Over time, the meaning shifted toward ideas of fiction or fable. Because of this, early Christian writers often avoided calling the stories in their sacred scriptures "myths." Some even viewed the term as having a negative connotation, implying something godless or silly.

Within the Christian tradition, there is a distinction between canonical and non-canonical stories. Canonical stories are those found in the official books of the Bible. For example, the creation accounts in Genesis are considered biblical myths. However, many other stories exist that are not in the official canon but still illustrate Christian themes. These include hagiographies, which are biographies of saints, and various folktales.

Some folktales involve a clever mortal outwitting the Devil, while others focus on a penitent sinner. These non-canonical traditions have shaped how people understand faith through legends and popular culture.

Different Christian denominations hold different views on which stories are sacred. For instance, the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches include texts like the Book of Judith and the Book of Tobit in their accepted books. Many Protestant denominations do not accept these specific texts as canonical.

This means that the set of sacred traditional narratives can vary depending on the specific church. This diversity shows how mythology can evolve and branch out as different groups form over many centuries.

Theologians have also explored the structure of the world through a mythical lens. The professor Rudolf Bultmann suggested that the cosmology of the New Testament is essentially mythical. He described the world as a three-storied structure. In this model, heaven is the abode of God and angels, while the underworld is a place of torment. The earth sits in the center.

According to this view, the world is a stage for supernatural activity. God, angels, Satan, and demons all intervene in the course of nature. This perspective suggests that history is not just a smooth line, but is controlled by these powerful supernatural forces.

Literature has played a massive role in expanding Christian mythology. Famous works like John Milton's "Paradise Lost" describe Satan's rebellion and the Fall of Man. Dante Alighieri's "Divine Comedy" provides a literary allegory of a journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven.

Modern authors have also used these themes to create new worlds. C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien are notable examples. Lewis famously used the term "true myth" to describe the story of Jesus Christ. He argued that while the story works like a myth, it possesses the unique quality of having actually happened.

Finally, Christian mythology connects to many other cultural and historical elements. It can be found in folk medicine, such as beliefs about herbs used to heal Christ's wounds. It also appears in Arthurian legends, where characters interact with objects like the Holy Lance.

Even the stories of the Apostles and the early church form a narrative foundation for the faith. From the miraculous birth of Jesus to the concept of the Second Coming and the final judgment, these stories continue to shape how people think about the divine and the end of the world.
