It sits in the Eastern Alps near the city of Graz. This cave is very important because it acts like a giant drain. It helps move water through the Tannenben karst region. The cave has two main entrances for people to find. One entrance is in the village of Semriach. The other entrance is in the village of Peggau.

Water moves through the cave in a very specific way. The Lurbach River flows into the cave at the Semriach entrance. Inside, the water travels through many underground channels. This cave is a complex system with three different levels. When it rains very hard, the water can overflow. This connects the Lur system to the Schmelz system. Finally, the Schmelz River flows out of the Peggau entrance.

Humans have known about this place for a very long time. Archaeologists found things that show people lived here long ago. They found a reindeer bone with marks from tools. This bone is about 52,000 years old. The first scientist to explore it was Max Brunello. He began his work on April 1, 1894. He found the lower parts of the cave.

Exploring the cave has been quite dangerous in the past. In April 1894, seven explorers were trapped by a flash flood. They were stuck inside for ten days. Emperor Franz Joseph I helped organize a big rescue. Many workers and divers helped bail out the water. Later, a woman named Leopoldine Fuhrich died while exploring. A memorial plaque for her is still inside the cave.

Today, you can still visit parts of this amazing place. You can see the Big Dome, also called the Bear Grotto. This room is huge and very tall. It got its name from old cave bear bones found there. You cannot walk through the whole cave anymore. A powerful storm in 1975 washed away the paths. The cave floods every year, so the paths stay gone. You can take tours at both ends instead.
