This cave is very special to scientists. It is a long and deep place. Many other caves in this mountain range are inactive. This means they are not growing anymore. However, Anou Boussouil is still changing today.

Water is the reason the cave grows. During the springtime rainy season, snow melts on the mountains. This melting snow pours through a channel. The water leads directly to the cave mouth. This water causes erosion. Erosion is when water wears away rock over time. This process makes the cave larger than it was before.

People first studied the cave in 1933. Two cavers named Fourastier and André Belin explored it. They were the first to study it scientifically. Later, other groups found the cave has two parts. The first part is narrow and twists. It eventually opens into a larger cavern.

The second part starts with a sinkhole. A sinkhole is a hole in the ground.

The second part has many deep pit chambers. One area is called the "hall of the hungry." This part leads to a flooded vault chamber. In 1950, explorers went down to 215 meters. At that time, it was the second-largest pit in the world. In 1980, an expedition found a new depth. The cave reaches a maximum depth of 285 meters.

This cave is one of the deepest in Africa. It was once called the deepest cave on the continent. Later, a cave called Anou Ifflis was explored to 300 meters. This means Anou Ifflis is deeper than Anou Boussouil. Even so, the Great Chasm is still a grand place. It shows us how water and rock work together.
