Many birds live in the holes on the cave walls. Most of them are white-collared swifts. You might also see green parakeets there.

The birds have a special way of moving. Every morning, they fly out in circles. They gain height until they reach the entrance. In the evening, the swifts circle the mouth of the cave. About once every minute, a group of 50 birds dives down. They pull in their wings to free-fall toward their nests. Then they spread their wings to fly again.

People have known about this cave for a long time. The local Huastec people knew it since ancient times. On December 27, 1966, four people were shown the cave. Their names were T. R. Evans, Charles Borland, Randy Sterns, and Sid West. The first recorded trip down into the cave was on April 4, 1967. Scientists believe the cave formed in limestone rocks. These rocks are from the Middle Cretaceous age. The cave grew through a process called solutional enlargement. This happened along a vertical crack in the rock.

The cave is a very deep place. The main shaft is very large. At the bottom, there are narrow pits called "The Crevice." These pits add more depth to the cave. The total depth reaches 333 meters.

The floor is covered in debris and guano. Guano is bird waste. Fungi in the guano can cause an illness called histoplasmosis. Many living things live on the walls and floor. You can find millipedes, scorpions, insects, snakes, and birds there.

People visit the cave for many different reasons. Many tourists come to watch the birds dive. Others come for extreme sports like caving. Cavers use ropes to rappel down the shaft. It can take one hour to reach the floor. It takes forty minutes to two hours to climb back up.

Some people also go BASE jumping here. A person without a parachute would fall for ten seconds. This makes the pit a popular spot for jumpers. It is a very exciting place to visit.
