Water plays a huge role in how these caves look. The caves are very rich in water. This water creates many rock shapes called speleothems. You might see stalactites hanging from the ceiling. You might also see stalagmites growing from the floor. Some rooms have many shapes that look like candles. The Sala dell'Infinito is a very tall room. It has huge columns that hold up the roof.

People found these caves at different times. A farmer found the first entrance on June 28, 1948. Later, members of the Italian Mountaineering Club found more entrances. They came from the towns of Jesi and Fabriano. In the 1970s, a new group found even more caves. This group was led by Giancarlo Cappanera. They found them on September 25, 1971. These caves are near the Rome–Ancona railway.

There are many special rooms inside the caves. The Grotta delle Nottole is named the Cave of the Bats. This name comes from the large colony of bats living there. The Grotta Grande del Vento is the Great Cave of the Wind. It was found in 1971 and has many paths. There is also a huge space called the Abisso Ancona. It is about 180 by 120 meters wide. It is also nearly 200 meters tall.

Scientists use the caves to learn about life. Researchers from Penn State studied tiny life called biofilms. They found these in underground lakes like Lago Verde. Some people call these biofilms "alien cave goo." These tiny living things survive without sunlight or oxygen. They use rocks and water to stay alive. This helps us understand how life first started on Earth.
