A farmer found the first entrance in 1948. More holes were found by climbers later. These caves are full of water. This water makes many rock shapes. Some look like candles. We call these shapes stalactites and stalagmites.

There are many big rooms inside. The Cave of the Bats has many bats. One room is called the Great Cave of the Wind. It has many paths. The Ancona Abyss is a huge space. It is 200 meters tall.

Scientists use these caves to study life. They look at biofilms. These are layers of tiny life. Some people call them "alien cave goo." These tiny things live in dark lakes. They live without sunlight or oxygen. They use rocks and water to stay alive. This helps us learn how life began on Earth.

One man lived in the cave for 210 days. He ate special food like an astronaut. He stayed away from the sun for a long time. He even wrote a book while he was there!
