It forms when limestone rock dissolves and collapses. This creates a hole that reaches the groundwater below. In Mexico, the Yucatán Peninsula has many of these sites. Some are large, open pools. Others are small and hidden.

The water in a cenote comes from rain. The rain filters slowly through the ground. This makes the water very clear. In some places, fresh water floats on top of salty ocean water. The layer where they meet is called a halocline. This layer can make vision look blurry.

Long ago, the Maya people used cenotes for water. They built big cities near them. The Maya also used some cenotes for special rites. They believed these holes were portals to the afterlife.

Many animals live in the water, like fish and eels. Some animals live in the dark. They might be blind or have no color.
