Sinkhole

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A sinkhole is a hole in the ground. It happens when the surface layer collapses.

These holes can be small or very big. They can form slowly or all at once.

Most sinkholes come from karst processes. This is a way that water dissolves rock. Water moves through cracks in rocks like limestone. As the rock dissolves, it leaves empty spaces.

These spaces grow into caves. Eventually, the ground above has no support. Then, the land falls in suddenly. This is called a cover-collapse sinkhole.

People can also cause sinkholes. Old sewer pipes can break under a road. Water leaks out and washes soil away. Pumping too much water from the ground can help. Large weights, like new ponds, can also trigger a collapse.

Sinkholes happen all over the world. Some are found in places like Florida and China. Scientists even found pits on a comet in space!
