A crevasse is a deep crack in a glacier or ice sheet.

These cracks form when ice moves. Different parts of the ice move at different speeds. This movement creates stress. The stress causes the ice to break.

Crevasses can have steep walls. These walls can melt into shapes like arches. Some cracks are very big. They can be deep and wide. Water can flow into them. This water can reach the bottom of the glacier. This helps the ice slide and move faster. Water can also flow through holes called moulins. These are drains that let water go down into the ice.

There are different kinds of crevasses. Transverse crevasses are the most common. They stretch across the glacier. They often form where a valley gets steeper. Splaying crevasses appear along the edges of the ice. Longitudinal crevasses form in a line with the flow.

Crevasses can be very dangerous. Sometimes a snow bridge covers them. A snow bridge is a layer of snow over a crack. These bridges can hide the crack from view. Falling into a crevasse can cause injury or death. People often use ropes to stay safe.
