Moraine

earth science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A moraine is a pile of rocky debris. This debris is left behind by a glacier. Glaciers act like a conveyor belt. They carry rocks, sand, and even tiny clay. We call this mix of materials glacial till.

There are many types of moraines. Lateral moraines form along the sides of the ice. They look like long ridges.

Medial moraines form in the middle of a glacier. This happens when two glaciers meet. Their side piles join together. This makes a dark line down the center.

End moraines form at the very front of the ice. They mark how far the glacier moved. A terminal moraine shows the furthest point the ice reached.

Some moraines are not ridges. Ground moraines cover the floor. They make the land look like rolling hills. These piles can contain everything from large boulders to fine dust. This dust is called glacial flour. Scientists study these piles to learn about the past.
