A sinkhole is a hole in the ground.

It can be small or very large. Sometimes it happens fast. Other times it happens slow.

Water can melt rock deep down. This happens in rocks like limestone. As the rock melts, it leaves a space.

This space grows bigger and bigger.

Sometimes the ground stays strong for a long time. Then, the top suddenly falls in. This makes a deep pit.

Large pits can even have rivers at the bottom.

People can also cause holes. Old pipes can break under the road. This lets water wash away the dirt.

Sinkholes can even be found in space! Scientists saw pits on a comet. They are amazing to see.
