The Yucatán Peninsula is a large piece of land in southeast Mexico.

It also covers parts of Belize and Guatemala. To the north and west is the Gulf of Mexico. To the east is the Caribbean Sea.

The land is very flat. It is made of porous limestone. This is a type of rock with many tiny holes. Because of this, there are no rivers on the ground in the north. Instead, there are many sinkholes called cenotes.

These holes let people reach fresh water underground.

Long ago, the Maya people lived here. They built famous stone cities like Chichen Itza.

You can still visit these ruins today.

The peninsula has a deep history. About 66 million years ago, a large asteroid hit the area.

This hit made a huge crater. Today, a ring of cenotes shows where the shock waves went.

The weather is tropical. It can be dry in the northwest. It is wet and has rainforests in the south. Many people visit the area for tourism.
