Long ago, a king named Charlemagne wanted beautiful art.

Long ago, a great empire rose in Europe.

Artists made many beautiful things. They made small statues from ivory. They also made bright books. These are called illuminated manuscripts. Some books used gold ink. Some were even written on purple paper.
Many artists worked in special groups. We call these workshops. One group was at the Court School. They made very fancy books. Another group was at Rheims. Their art felt full of life. They used quick, fresh lines to draw people.
Some books were very special treasures. They had covers made of gold. They also had many bright jewels.
This art style changed the world. It helped lead to new styles later on. It showed how to draw the human form with confidence.
Carolingian art was a special way of making things during a time of great change. This era lasted about 120 years, from roughly 780 to 900. It happened during the reign of Charlemagne and his heirs. This time is often called the Carolingian Renaissance.
Artists used many different ways to create beauty. One of the most famous ways was making illuminated manuscripts. These are books decorated with bright colors and gold ink.

Charlemagne wanted to bring back the glory of the old Roman Empire. He was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in Rome in the year 800. He sought a revival of Roman culture and learning.
Many different workshops created these works in different styles. The Court School of Charlemagne made very fancy, ornate books.

This era of art changed how people in Europe made things. Even after the empire ended around 900, the influence stayed. The art helped lead to the Romanesque and Gothic styles.
Carolingian art refers to a specific period of artistic production in the Frankish Empire. This era lasted roughly 120 years, from about 780 to 900. It occurred during the reigns of Charlemagne and his immediate heirs. This period is often called the Carolingian Renaissance.
To create these works, artists blended different cultural traditions and materials. They combined classical Mediterranean styles with Northern European elements. This resulted in a dignified and sumptuous style that gave artists new confidence in representing the human figure.
Carolingian art can be divided into several distinct workshops or "schools." Each center developed its own unique style based on its specific artists and influences. The first major center was the Court School of Charlemagne, also known as the Ada School. They produced ornate, ostentatious manuscripts that looked like 6th-century mosaics.
The movement began because Charlemagne wanted to revive Roman culture, a process called *renovatio*. He was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in Rome in the year 800. He felt the Frankish Empire needed an artistic style that matched its massive size. The existing Germanic migration period art was mostly ornamental and could not tell complex stories.
The significance of this era is seen in its lasting impact on Western art history. It introduced a new way of depicting human forms and spatial relationships. This helped set the stage for the later rise of Romanesque and Gothic art.
One notable example of innovation is the *historiated initial*. This is a large, decorated letter that contains a small narrative scene within it. This technique was developed toward the end of the period, seen in the Drogo Sacramentary.
Carolingian art connects many different cultural systems and historical movements. It merged the traditions of the British Isles, known as Insular art, with Byzantine and Late Antique models. For example, the use of interlaced decoration came from Insular influences.
