The monks at Cluny had a very different way of working. Most monks at that time did hard farm work to survive. The monks at Cluny chose to focus on constant prayer instead. They called this perpetual praise. To do this, they hired other people to do the physical labor. They had managers and workers to tend to the fields and mills. This allowed the monks to spend their time on religious tasks. They even recited many psalms every single day.

A man named William I, Duke of Aquitaine, founded the abbey in 910.

He wanted the monastery to be independent from local leaders. He made sure the abbey answered only to the Pope. This helped the abbey grow into a powerful group. It eventually managed a large network of other smaller houses called priories. These priories were all supervised by the main abbot at Cluny. This was a very organized and successful system for the time.

The abbey was also very wealthy and beautiful.

The monks used precious items like gold chalices and silver candelabras. They even wore fine linen and silk during their services. They built three large churches one after another. The third church, called Cluny III, was a huge achievement. It was the largest church in Europe for a long time. It remained the biggest until a new church was built in Rome.

Time brought many changes to the abbey. During the French Revolution in 1790, the abbey was attacked. Most of the buildings were destroyed during this period. Later, the site was even used as a place to collect stone. Today, very little of the original monastery remains standing.
