Suger was a very important leader in France a long time ago. He lived from the year 1081 until early 1151. He was born into a family of minor knights near a village called Chennevières-lès-Louvres.

This village was near Saint-Denis in northern Paris. When Suger was only ten years old, he became an oblate. An oblate is a person given to live in a monastery. He lived at the abbey of Saint-Denis to train for religious life. He was very good at learning Latin and legal rules. These skills helped him lead people and manage important tasks.

Suger worked hard to help his abbey and the kings of France. He became a secretary for Abbot Adam in the year 1106. This job helped him learn about politics and how to travel. He went on many missions to different places for his abbey. He even traveled to Rome to attend a large council. Sometimes his work was quite difficult and involved fighting in battles. He later said he felt bad about being involved in war.

He preferred to use his mind to solve problems for the kingdom.

Because he was so wise, kings trusted him very much. He was a close advisor to King Louis VI and his son, Louis VII. Suger even helped rule France as a regent for a while. This happened in 1147 when Louis VII went on a Second Crusade. A crusade was a long journey for religious reasons. While the king was away, Suger helped keep the land safe. He also helped make sure that laws were followed fairly. He was a very busy man who helped both the church and the king.

One of Suger's biggest jobs was rebuilding the Abbey of Saint-Denis. He wanted the building to be beautiful and full of light.

He began this huge project around the year 1137. To do this, he used new ways of building called Gothic architecture. His builders used pointed arches and ribbed vaults to hold up the roof. They also used flying buttresses, which are supports on the outside of walls. These supports let them put in very large windows. One special window he added was a large rose window.

The new building was finished and dedicated on June 11, 1144.

Suger's ideas changed how people built churches forever. The new style at Saint-Denis became a model for many other buildings. This style is known as Gothic architecture because of its light and height. People still look at his work to learn about history. Even today, you can find his name on streets and schools in France.
