Louis Le Vau was a famous French architect from the 17th century. An architect is a person who designs buildings and plans how they look. He helped start a new style called French Classical architecture. This style used simple building shapes with very elegant decorations. He mixed this style with a more decorative style called Baroque. His work made buildings look both grand and very organized. People still admire his skill in making beautiful spaces today.

Le Vau learned about building from his family. His father was a stonemason who worked with stone in Paris. A stonemason is a person who cuts and shapes stone for buildings. Louis worked with his father and his brother, François, in the 1630s. Later, the brothers changed their name spelling from Le Veau to Le Vau. They did this to avoid a word that meant "calf."

His career grew very fast during his life. In 1634, he designed the Hôtel de Bautru. By 1639, he was building town houses for rich citizens. These houses were built in a place called île Saint-Louis. His most famous house from this time was the Hôtel Lambert. He also designed country houses like the Château de Livry.

In 1654, Le Vau became the first architect to the king. The king was Louis XIV, also known as the Sun King. One of his greatest jobs was building Vaux-le-Vicomte in 1656. He worked there with André Le Nôtre and Charles Le Brun. This castle has a famous oval room called a salon. It is a salon à l'italienne, which means a two-story room with a vaulted ceiling.

Le Vau spent his final years working on the Palace of Versailles. He helped build the service wings near the front courtyards. After 1668, he helped rebuild the garden side to look classical. He also helped fix the Louvre after a fire in the 1660s. He died on 11 October 1670, when he was about 57 years old. His assistant, François d'Orbay, finished some of his work later.
