Louis Le Vau was a famous French architect. An architect is a person who plans and designs buildings. His father was a stonemason who worked with stone. Louis and his brother François both became architects. They even changed the spelling of their name. They wanted to avoid a word that meant "calf."

Louis made many grand houses for rich people. He built the Hôtel Lambert in Paris. He also designed the Château de Livry. In 1654, he became the first architect to the king. The king was Louis XIV.

One of his best works is Vaux-le-Vicomte. This is a large castle. It has a special room called a salon. This room is shaped like an oval. It is a salon à l'italienne, which is a two-story room with a curved ceiling.

Louis also helped plan the Palace of Versailles. He worked on this huge palace for many years. He added new wings to the front. He also helped fix the Louvre after a fire. His work helped start a new style of building. This style used simple shapes and pretty decorations.
