Becket studied at several schools. He went to Merton Priory in Surrey. He also attended a grammar school in London. He spent a year studying in Paris. Later, he worked for the Archbishop of Canterbury, Theobald of Bec. Theobald helped him study law in places like Bologna. Becket was a very efficient worker. This led the King to name him Lord Chancellor in 1155.

In 1162, Becket became the Archbishop of Canterbury.

This was a huge change for him. He used to be a busy official for the King. Now, he was a leader of the church. A big problem grew between Becket and King Henry II. They argued about how much power the King should have. The King wanted to control certain church rules. Becket wanted the church to keep its own rights. This created a deep split between the two men. Becket even had to flee to France for nearly two years.

History tells us many stories about this time. Many writers wrote biographies about Becket's life. Some writers are known, like John of Salisbury and Edward Grim. Other writers left their names out of their books.

These writers help us understand what happened. We also have records from people who wrote about events as they happened. These are called chronicles. They tell us about the many arguments between the King and the Archbishop. The conflict grew even more serious in 1164. The King held a meeting at Clarendon Palace. He wanted the church leaders to agree to his new rules. Becket refused to sign them.

On 29 December 1170, a sad event happened in Canterbury.

Four knights who followed the King went to the cathedral. They arrived and hid their armor under cloaks. They went inside to challenge Becket. The knights told him he must answer to the King. Becket refused to give in to their demands. The knights used swords to attack him.

They saw him as a martyr. A martyr is someone who dies for what they believe in. Two years after he died, Pope Alexander III named him a saint. Many people began to visit his shrine in Canterbury. This is similar to how people visit holy places today. His life is still remembered in many beautiful stained glass windows.

He remains a famous figure in both the Catholic and Anglican churches.
