He lived during the 11th century and was born in Pavia, Italy. His father, Hanbald, was a man of high rank. Lanfranc became an orphan when he was quite young. He studied the liberal arts in northern Italy. This was a very famous place for learning at that time. He later moved across the Alps to teach in France and Normandy. He eventually became a monk at the new Bec Abbey in 1042.

As a teacher, Lanfranc was known as a master of Latin.

He opened a school at Bec to help the monastery. Students came from many places like Germany, Italy, and Flanders. He taught subjects like grammar, logic, and rhetoric. He also used logic to explain religious ideas. One of his famous students was Anselm of Badagio. This student later became Pope Alexander II. Another student, Anselm of Bec, followed Lanfranc as the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Lanfranc was also a very important person in politics. He served as the Abbot of Saint-Étienne in Caen. He worked closely with William the Conqueror in Normandy. Lanfranc even helped the Duke get approval for his marriage to Matilda of Flanders. In 1066, William conquered England. Shortly after, Lanfranc became the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1070.
