His family had many connections to leaders and nobles. His father was named Gundulph and his mother was Ermenberge. Anselm wanted to join a monastery when he was only fifteen. His father did not let him join at first. This made Anselm very sad and he even became sick. Later, he left home to find his own path. He traveled through France for three years before reaching Normandy.

Anselm eventually arrived at the Abbey of Bec.

A man named Lanfranc helped him settle there. Anselm became a leader at the abbey when he was young. He was first a prior and then he became the abbot. He was known for being very kind to the younger monks. He used a gentle way to teach them how to behave. Under his leadership, Bec became a huge center for learning. Students traveled from many places to study there. He wrote many important books while he lived at the abbey.

Anselm is famous for his very deep ideas. He used logic to study big questions about faith. Some people call him the founder of Scholasticism. This is a way of using reason to understand religion. He created the ontological argument to talk about God. He also wrote about how people find peace with the divine. His books, like the Proslogion, are still studied today. He was a very talented writer and philosopher. His work helped shape how people think about big truths.

This was a very powerful position in the church. However, his time in England was quite difficult. He had many disagreements with the English kings. King William II and King Henry I were both leaders he clashed with. These fights were part of a larger struggle called the Investiture Controversy. Because of these disagreements, Anselm was sent away from England twice. He lived in exile from 1097 to 1100. He was also exiled again from 1105 to 1107.

Even with these hard times, Anselm's legacy grew. After he died in 1109, the church named him a saint.

In the year 1720, Pope Clement XI called him a Doctor of the Church. This is a very high honor for a thinker. People still remember his name in many ways today. You can see monuments to him in Italy and England. His life shows how much one person can think and do. He remains a major figure in history and religion.
