Anselm of Canterbury was a highly influential Benedictine monk, abbot, and theologian. He lived during the 11th and early 12th centuries. Anselm is recognized as a major figure in the history of the Catholic Church. He served as the Archbishop of Canterbury from 1093 to 1109. Beyond his leadership roles, he was a profound philosopher. Many scholars credit him as the founder of Scholasticism. This is a method of learning that uses logic to understand faith. He is also famous for creating the ontological argument. This is a philosophical way to argue for the existence of God.
Anselm was born in or around Aosta, Italy, between April 1033 and April 1034.
Anselm spent much of his career at the Abbey of Bec. He first became the prior of the abbey in 1063. Later, in 1078, he was elected as the abbot. Under his guidance, Bec became a leading center for European learning. Students traveled from Italy and France to study there. Anselm was known for his kind method of discipline. He preferred to use affection and trust to lead younger monks. While at Bec, he wrote many important works. These included the *Monologion* and the *Proslogion*. His writings often used a rational and philosophical approach.
Anselm's intellectual work focused on deep theological questions. He wrote dialogues regarding truth, free will, and the fall of Satan. He also defended Trinitarianism against the thinker Roscelin.
In 1093, Anselm moved to England to serve as Archbishop of Canterbury.

Despite his political struggles, Anselm achieved many religious goals. During his exile, he helped Greek Catholic bishops in southern Italy. He guided them to adopt Roman Rites at the Council of Bari. In England, he worked to establish Canterbury's authority. He sought primacy over the Archbishop of York and the bishops of Wales. While he seemed successful at the time of his death, the outcome changed later. Pope Paschal II eventually reversed certain decisions regarding York. However, Anselm's reputation as a holy man remained strong. He was canonized as a saint after his death in 1109.
Anselm's legacy is honored through several official titles and monuments. In 1720, Pope Clement XI proclaimed him a Doctor of the Church. This was done through a formal document called a papal bull. Today, his influence is still visible in religious studies. People can visit his tomb at Canterbury Cathedral.
