Suger was a very wise man. He served as an advisor to two kings. These were King Louis VI and King Louis VII. He even helped rule the land for a time. This happened when the king went on a crusade. A crusade was a long journey for religious reasons.

Suger was also the head of a place called Saint-Denis. He was the abbot there. An abbot is a leader of a group of monks. Suger wanted to make the abbey look beautiful. He helped start a new way to build churches. This style is called Gothic.

He used new parts to make buildings strong. He used pointed arches and ribbed vaults. These are curved parts that hold up a roof. He also used flying buttresses. These are outside supports that hold up the walls. This allowed him to add very large windows. He wanted the church to be full of light. The new building at Saint-Denis became a model for others. People still study his work today.
