In 1830, France began an invasion of Algeria. Abdelkader rose to lead the Algerian tribes during this time. He was elected as an Emir in 1832. This happened after his father said he was too old. Abdelkader used politics and raids to unite the tribes. He even signed the Desmichels Treaty in 1834. This treaty gave him control over the Oran Province.

He later signed the Treaty of Tafna in 1837.

He built a new state with its own capital at Tagdemt. This state had its own money called the muhammadiyya. Abdelkader led a standing army of 2,000 men. He also used volunteers from the local tribes. He lived a very simple life in a tent. This showed his people the value of being careful with things. He even hired people of different faiths to help him. He used Jewish and Christian experts to build his nation.

Abdelkader was known for his kindness and respect. He treated his enemies with great care. Once, he released French prisoners because he lacked food. In 1860, he saved many Christians in Damascus. This brave act earned him awards from all over the world. Even after he had to surrender, he remained respected.
