In the early 1000s, many monks in Europe faced hard times. They lived in a time of Viking raids and poverty. Many abbeys were losing their way. Local lords often controlled the monasteries. These lords treated churches like family property. They would take the money from the monks. Sometimes, lords even put their own relatives in charge. This made it hard for monks to follow their holy rules. The Cluniac Reforms began to fix these problems. This movement wanted to bring back a traditional monastic life.

The reforms worked by making monasteries more independent. Before this, many monks did not follow the Rule of Saint Benedict. Some monks wore rich clothes. Others did not fast or eat only vegetables. Some even changed prayer times so they could sleep more. The Cluniac movement wanted to stop this interference. They wanted an independent leader called an abbot. This leader could enforce the old rules strictly. The new way focused on prayer, silence, and solitude.

This movement has a very interesting history. It started at Cluny Abbey in Burgundy. William I, the Duke of Aquitaine, founded the abbey in 910. He asked Abbot Berno to lead the new place. Later, Saint Odo helped the reforms spread. The movement grew very fast across many lands. It spread through France, England, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. By the 1100s, the group had more than one thousand monasteries.

Many important people supported these changes. Pope Urban II was a notable supporter. Other leaders included Lambert of Hersfeld and Richard of Verdun. The reforms also changed how people used art. The monks loved beautiful things for their churches. They used gold vessels for the altar. They also used fine fabrics and stained glass. They even used polyphonic choral music. This made the Romanesque churches very special places.

The Cluniac Reforms changed how the Church worked in the West. They helped the papacy gain more control. The movement also supported the Peace of God. They encouraged people to go on pilgrimages to the Holy Lands. One monk from Cluny was named Robert de Molesme. In 1098, he led a group to start a new monastery. They built Cîteaux Abbey in a marshy area near Dijon. This became the start of the Cistercian Order.
