In the 900s, monks in Europe faced many problems. Many abbeys were not following their old rules. Local lords often controlled the monasteries. These lords sometimes took the money from the monks. This left the monks living in poverty. Some lords even treated the churches like family property. They would put their own relatives in charge. This made it hard for monks to live their holy lives.

To fix this, a new movement began. It started at Cluny Abbey in the year 910. A man named William I founded the abbey. Later, Saint Odo helped the movement grow. The goal was to follow the Rule of Saint Benedict. This rule focused on prayer, silence, and being alone. It helped monks stay independent from local lords.

The movement became very large. By the 1100s, it had over one thousand monasteries. The Cluniac monks also loved beautiful things. They used gold vessels and fine cloth in church. They liked stained glass and choral music too. They also helped the poor and supported holy journeys. This movement changed how the Church worked in Europe.
