St. Anthony of Egypt was a famous hermit. He lived in the desert. Later, people started to live in groups. This is called cenobitic life. St. Pachomius helped start these groups in Egypt. In these communities, monks lived in small rooms. But they ate and prayed in shared spaces. They also did many kinds of work. Some monks were farmers. Others were carpenters. Some even worked on ships to sell goods. They also spent time copying books. St. Benedict wrote a famous set of rules for monks. These rules helped them live together in peace. Monastic life is a way to focus on faith.
