William the Conqueror led an invasion of England at that time. The first castle was a simple motte-and-bailey design. It used earth and wood to stay strong. Later, people replaced the wood with stone walls. King Edward III built a very grand palace in the 14th century. This was one of the most expensive building projects in English history.

Many famous people changed the castle over the years.

Queen Elizabeth I used the castle for important meetings. During the English Civil War, the castle was used as a prison. King Charles II had much of the castle rebuilt in 1660. Later, George IV spent a lot of money on new designs. In 1992, a big fire damaged some of the rooms. Workers had to do a lot of hard work to fix them.

Windsor Castle connects the past to the present day. The buildings show many different styles of art and design. Some rooms look like they are from the Middle Ages. Other rooms look like they belong to the Victorian era.
