This site is deeply connected to the English and British royal families. It represents nearly one thousand years of architectural history. The castle is the longest-occupied palace in all of Europe. It serves as a fortification, a palace, and even a small town. Today, it remains a major site for state visits and tourism.

The castle's structure is divided into several distinct sections. The Middle Ward is located at the heart of the castle. It is built around a motte, which is an artificial hill. This hill was originally made from chalk excavated from a surrounding ditch. At the top of the motte stands the Round Tower.

The tower was extended in the early 19th century by architect Jeffry Wyatville. The Upper Ward is another major area. It contains a central quadrangle surrounded by several large buildings. This area includes the State Apartments and the private royal apartments.

The State Apartments are a vital part of the Upper Ward. They run along the north side of the quadrangle. The building follows medieval foundations laid by King Edward III. The ground floor contains service chambers and cellars. The first floor holds the grander rooms used for official business. These rooms follow different architectural styles like Classical, Gothic, and Rococo.

Architect Jeffry Wyatville redesigned the eastern end of these apartments. He created rooms like the Grand Reception Room and the State Dining Room. Some historians call these rooms the finest expression of Georgian taste.

History shows how the castle changed through many different eras. The original castle was a motte-and-bailey built in the 11th century. This happened after the Norman invasion led by William the Conqueror.

Over time, the wood was replaced by stone fortifications. During the 14th century, Edward III began a massive rebuilding project. It was one of the most expensive secular building projects in medieval England. Later, the Tudor monarchs like Henry VIII used the castle for diplomacy. The castle even served as a military headquarters during the English Civil War.

Many monarchs left their mark on the castle's design. After the Restoration in 1660, Charles II rebuilt much of the castle. He worked with architect Hugh May to create Baroque interiors. Later, George III and George IV spent enormous amounts of money on renovations. These projects created the current design of the state apartments. Queen Victoria also used the castle as a center for royal entertainment. During the Second World War, the royal family used it as a refuge.

Even the name of the royal House of Windsor comes from this estate.

One of the most significant structures is St George's Chapel. It was built in the 15th century inside the castle walls.

Historians consider it a supreme achievement of English Perpendicular Gothic design. The castle has also faced significant challenges. In 1992, a large fire damaged several state rooms. This required an extensive restoration process. Workers used equivalent restoration methods to match the original appearance. They used modern materials but hid them to keep the historic look.

Windsor Castle connects various fields of study and history. It is a primary example of how architecture imitates older traditions. Architects have often reinterpreted Gothic or Baroque styles to fit new eras. This creates a sense of a theatrical performance or a "fictive quality."

The castle also connects to modern political history. It was the main residence of Queen Elizabeth II from 2011 to 2022. It remains a symbol of the British monarchy and a centerpiece of European architectural heritage.
