It covers most of the continuous urban area of London. The region sits near several other counties. To the north is Hertfordshire. To the northeast is Essex. To the southeast is Kent. To the south are Surrey. Finally, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire sit to the west.

Most of this land is covered by buildings and cities. This is known as a built-up area. In 2011, this large urban area had 9,787,426 people living in it.

The River Thames is the most important part of the landscape. It enters the area near Hampton in the west. Then, it flows toward the east. It eventually exits the area downstream of Dagenham. The land right next to the river is very flat. However, the ground rises into low hills as you move away. You can find hills like Hampstead Heath and Shooter's Hill. The highest point is Westerham Heights, which is 260 metres high.

The way the area is managed has changed many times. Long ago, the land was part of Middlesex, Essex, Surrey, Kent, and Hertfordshire. The City of London has had its own government since the Anglo-Saxon period. In 1889, the London County Council was made to govern the core urban area. In 1965, a new system called Greater London was created. It replaced the old counties of Middlesex and London. Later, in 1986, the Greater London Council was abolished.

Today, the Greater London Authority handles big tasks for the whole region.

Greater London is divided into many smaller parts for local rule. There are 32 London boroughs that each have their own council. The City of London is also there, but it is a separate ceremonial county.

The City of London is often called the "Square Mile." It is a famous financial district. The Greater London Authority was formed in the year 2000. It includes an elected London Assembly and a Mayor of London. The Mayor is responsible for big plans for the whole area.

Many people use the word "London" to mean this whole region. While the whole area does not have official city status, two parts do. The City of London and the City of Westminster are both official cities. The area also has special green spaces to keep it beautiful. Part of Epping Forest, an ancient woodland, is in the northeast. There is also a "Green Belt" that protects natural land from being built on.
