London Calling is a famous music album by the English rock band, the Clash.

It was released as a double album in the United Kingdom in December 1979. In the United States and Canada, it arrived in January 1980. This record is special because it explores many different musical styles. The band moved beyond their punk rock roots to include reggae and ska. They also used sounds from rockabilly, jazz, and pop music. People love it because it feels like a huge, musical journey.

Before the band recorded the album, they faced a very hard job. Songwriters Joe Strummer and Mick Jones had writer's block. This means they could not think of new songs for over a year. To fix this, they practiced in a studio called Vanilla Studios. This studio was located in the back of a garage in Pimlico. The band followed a very strict daily routine to stay focused. They practiced in the afternoon and played football together to stay close. After football, they went to a local pub and practiced again in the evening.

In August 1979, the band moved to Wessex Sound Studios to record. They worked with a producer named Guy Stevens. Stevens had very unusual ways of working with the band. During one session, he even poured wine over a piano! The band worked very hard during this five to six week period. They often worked for 18 hours in a single day. Many of the songs were finished in only one or two takes. This helped the music feel very energetic and real.

The songs on the album tell many different stories. Some songs are about life in London and the people there. They talk about things like jobs, race, and growing up. For example, the song "The Guns of Brixton" was written by bassist Paul Simonon. It explores how a person might feel very worried or paranoid. Another song, "Lost in the Supermarket," looks at how people shop. The lyrics can be serious, but the music is always powerful.

Many people consider this one of the greatest albums ever made. It has sold more than five million copies all over the world. In the United States, it was certified platinum for selling one million copies. The album cover is also very famous. It shows Paul Simonon smashing his bass guitar on a stage.
