Many people live here but they also travel to London for work. The largest settlement in the county is Watford. Other important towns include Stevenage, St Albans, and Hemel Hempstead.

The land in Hertfordshire has many different shapes and feels. The west side is quite hilly because of the Chiltern Hills.

Rivers like the Lea and the Colne flow through the land. The River Lea passes through many towns before it joins the River Thames. Some parts of the county are also covered by a green belt to keep the land undeveloped.

History has left many marks on this place over many centuries. People have lived here since the Mesolithic period.

During the Roman period, the town of Verulamium was built near modern St Albans. Later, the Anglo-Saxons settled here and gave many towns their names. You can see this in names ending in "ford" or "ton." In the year 913, a fort was built at Hertford. The name Hertford comes from an old word meaning "deer crossing."

Many famous things have happened in Hertfordshire throughout time. During the Tudor times, Queen Elizabeth I visited Hatfield House.

In the 1900s, Letchworth became the very first garden city in the world. Stevenage was also special because it was the first town built under a new law in 1946. The county has also seen some difficult moments. There were rail accidents in Hatfield and Potters Bar. There was also an explosion at an oil terminal in Hemel Hempstead in 2005.

Today, Hertfordshire is a very busy and creative place. It is famous for making movies and television shows.

The Warner Bros. studios in Leavesden filmed the Harry Potter series. Many people also know the area because of the Star Wars movies. Famous directors like Stanley Kubrick lived and worked here too. Even TV shows like EastEnders are filmed in the area. It is a place where old history meets modern magic.
