The area is divided into three local government parts called unitary authorities. These are Bedford, Central Bedfordshire, and Luton.

The land here has many different shapes and textures. The middle of the county is a flat area called a clay plateau. A ridge of greensand runs through this area from the south-west to the north-east. In the south, you can find part of the chalk Chiltern Hills. The north of the county has a limestone ridge.

The River Great Ouse flows through the land in a winding path. It enters the county in the north-east and flows toward the south. It eventually turns north-east to leave the county near St Neots.

People have lived in this area for a very long time. The name Bedfordshire was first recorded in the year 1011. It was called "Bedanfordscir" back then. This name means the county of Bedford. The word Bedford itself means "Beda's ford." A ford is a place where a river can be crossed. In the past, the county was divided into nine different areas called hundreds. Some of these areas had names like Barford and Biggleswade.

There are many interesting facts about the geology and climate here. Most of the rocks are made of clay and sandstone. People have used local clay to make Fletton-style bricks in the Marston Vale.
