The landscape has a very interesting shape. There are two bands of hills in the north and south. These hills separate a low area in the middle. This low part is a clay vale around the River Thames.

The River Thames flows through the center of the county. Many smaller rivers, like the Cherwell, feed into it. The Oxford Canal also links the river to the Midlands. In the north, you can find the Cotswolds hills. These hills are part of a protected National Landscape. The south has the Berkshire Downs and the Chiltern Hills. These areas are known for being very beautiful.

History has shaped Oxfordshire for a very long time. It was recorded as a county in the early 10th century. Long ago, the Romans did not use the area much. It became more important when people settled in Oxford. The name Oxford comes from an old word for a ford for oxen.

This means it was a place where oxen could cross the water. The famous University of Oxford was founded in 1096. During the Middle Ages, the area became very wealthy. This was because of the wool trade in the Cotswolds. Even the great leader Alfred the Great was born nearby in Wantage.

There are many important places and facts to know. Oxford is a huge center for learning and visitors. It is the sixth most visited city in the United Kingdom.

Another special place is Blenheim Palace near Woodstock. This is where Sir Winston Churchill was born in 1874. The palace has beautiful gardens designed by "Capability" Brown. Other big towns include Banbury, Bicester, and Witney. Banbury has a population of about 54,335 people. Abingdon-on-Thames is another large town with 37,931 people.

Today, people use the land in many different ways. Most of the land is still used for farming. However, very few people work in agriculture now. In 2023, only 1.2 per cent of people worked in farming or fishing. This is because machines do much of the hard work now. In 1912, Morris Motors was founded in Oxford. This brought big industry to the county. Now, there is a plan for a huge new theme park. A company called Puy du Fou wants to build it. This project might cost 600 million pounds. It shows that Oxfordshire is still a place where new things happen.
