It is a landlocked area, which means it does not touch the sea. You can find it surrounded by Staffordshire to the north and west. To the south lies Worcestershire. To the east, it reaches into Warwickshire. The county is almost entirely urban. This means it is made up of many towns and cities. It is a very crowded place to live. In fact, it is the most populous county in England after Greater London.

Most of the people live in a large group of connected towns. This area is called a conurbation.

Birmingham is the largest city and sits right in the middle. To the east, you will find Solihull and the city of Coventry. To the west, there are West Bromwich and the city of Wolverhampton. Sutton Coldfield is located in the north. A green area called the Meriden Gap separates the main urban area from Coventry. This gap stays rural and keeps a natural feel.
