It was once a historic county with its own rules. Today, it is part of a larger area called Cumbria. However, the name has returned to maps in 2023. It is now part of a group called Westmorland and Furness. This new area includes the old county and parts of nearby Yorkshire and Lancashire.

The land in Westmorland is very beautiful and varied. It includes part of the Lake District and the southern Vale of Eden. The highest point in the whole county is a mountain called Helvellyn.

To the north, it borders Cumberland. To the east, it sits near County Durham and Yorkshire. Lancashire lies to the south and west. The big lakes Windermere and Ullswater help form its borders.

The history of this place is quite long and complex. In the year 1086, the county did not even exist yet. At that time, half the land was part of Yorkshire. The other half was thought to be part of Scotland. By the year 1226, the area became one single county. Appleby became the important county town during this time. It was given a special charter in the year 1179.

Westmorland was divided into different sections to help people manage the land. These sections were called baronies and wards. The two main baronies were Kendal and Westmorland. The county was also split into urban and rural districts. Many of these places, like Shap, were actually very rural. In 1889, a county council was created to run things. This council was based in the town of Kendal. The county was not very crowded with people. In 1971, it was the second least populated county in England.

People who live in this area are known as Westmerians. The name Westmorland might mean the land of the western lakes. This is because the word "mere" can mean a lake.

The area also has a special coat of arms. It shows a gold apple tree and a Herdwick ram.
