The land here has many different shapes and features. About two thirds of the territory is in the Eastern Sudetes. The rest of the land spreads into several other areas. These include the Ostrava Basin and the Moravian Gate. It also covers the Moravian-Silesian Foothills and the Western Beskids. Three major rivers flow through this landscape. These are the Oder, the Opava, and the Olza. The Olza river helps form a natural border with Poland.

This region has a very long and changing history. In the Middle Ages, it was part of Poland. In the 14th century, it passed to the Kingdom of Bohemia. After a war in 1742, a small part stayed with the Bohemian Crown. This part became the Duchy of Upper and Lower Silesia. Its capital city was Opava. In the year 1900, the Duchy had 670,000 people living there.

Many difficult events happened in this area during the 20th century. Between 1938 and 1945, parts of the land changed hands during wars. German occupiers brought much hardship to the people living there. They set up several camps for prisoners and forced labor. These included camps for many different groups of people from many countries. After World War II, the area returned to Czechoslovakia. The borders were eventually set along the Olza river.
