This province uses a special way to lead its people. Instead of one capital, two cities share the work. Gorzów Wielkopolski and Zielona Góra are both regional capitals.

Gorzów is where the governor sits. The governor is a leader appointed by the central government. Zielona Góra is the home of the regional assembly. This assembly is a group of people elected by the local voters. They choose a leader called a marshal to help run things.

The history of this land goes back a very long time. Some towns here are over 1,000 years old. You can see the old walls in the town of Żary.

Long ago, the land was part of many different duchies. These included the duchies of Greater Poland and Silesia. The Piast dynasty ruled many of these areas. In the 1700s, the city of Wschowa was very important. It hosted Polish kings and was called the "unofficial capital of Poland."

During World War II, the region saw much hardship. Many large prisoner-of-war camps were located in this area. These camps held people from many different countries. Some prisoners were from Britain, Canada, and even the United States. One famous place was Stalag Luft III, where the "Great Escape" happened in 1944. The region also had concentration camps like Sonnenburg. These were very difficult places for the people held there. After the war, the borders were redrawn by the Potsdam Agreement. This placed the Lubusz area inside the new borders of Poland.

The province we know today was created on January 1, 1999. It was made from two older provinces named Gorzów and Zielona Góra. This happened because of new government rules in 1998. Before this, there were many smaller provinces that were hard to manage. There was a lot of debate about how to shape the new map. Some people wanted different cities to be the capitals. Eventually, the cities reached a compromise called the Paradyż Agreement. This allowed the two cities to share the leadership of the province.
