The landscape of Pomerania is very varied and interesting to look at. Most of the land is low and flat. This area is part of a huge area called the Central European Plain. In the south, the land rises into hills called the Baltic Ridge. These hills were formed a long time ago by ice. Inside these hills, you can find the Pomeranian Lake District. This area is filled with many beautiful lakes.

Nature looks different depending on where you stand in the region. The western coastline is very jagged and uneven. It has many peninsulas and large islands. Rügen is the biggest island in Germany. Wolin is the biggest island in Poland. You can also find the islands of Usedom and Uznam there. These islands help create many bays and lagoons. The eastern coastline is much smoother than the west.

The history of this place goes back a very long time. The name Pomerania comes from old words meaning "along the sea." One of the earliest records of the area is from the year 1046. This document mentioned a leader named Zemuzil. He was known as the Duke of the Pomeranians. Since then, the borders have changed many times. Different groups of people have lived in sub-regions like Kashubia or the Tuchola Forest.
